Battle of Gonzales: With tensions rising between citizens of Texas and the Central Mexican government in 1835, the military commander of San Antonio de Bexar, Colonel Domingo de Ugartecha began taking actions to disarm the region. One of his efforts was to request that the settlement of Gonzales return a small cannon which had been given to the town in 1831 to aid in fending off Indian attacks. Aware of Ugartecha"s motives, the settlers refused to turn over the gun. Upon hearing this response, Ugartecha dispatched a force of 100 dragoons to seize the cannon. Shots were exchanges but, finally, the Mexican troops retreated. This Battle was often called the Lexington of Texas (the Battle of Lexington was the first battle in the American Revolution) This battle was the start of the Texas Revolution.

A reenactment of the Siege of Bexar
Siege of Bexar: The December of 1835, San Antonio de Bexar was under the control of General Cos with about 1200 soldiers from Mexico. For almost 2 months, Texas volunteers had camped near the town in a virtual standoff with Cos. This ended when one of the Texas leaders, Ben Milam, returned from a brief absense to find that Texans were about to withdraw to Goliad. Milam appealed to the Texans with these famous words, "Who will go with old Ben Milam into San Antonio?" About 300 volunteers responded. Beginning on the morning of December 5, the Texans, led by Milam and Frank W. Johnson, began thier siege. Against heavy odds, the Texans skirmished for the next 2 days. Although Milam was killed December 7, the Texans kept fighting. After 4 days of fighting, Cos signaled a Mexican truce. During the siege, the Texans only lost 4 men, including Milam.
